Can you catch flounder from the surf on slow pitch jigs? Yes. At Jax Beach we fished jigs from 10g up to 40g and put flounder on the sand, plus a couple of jacks. It took a rough first trip and a second try to get it right.

The first trip was a bust

My buddy Julian had been fishing the beach with our jigs and told me it was producing. He gave me the general location. Kevin from Fishing Reps and I headed out.

It was rough. The surf was high, the wind was up, and we didn't do well. Same beach, wrong day.

Go back when conditions change

We regrouped and picked Saturday. Then Kevin threw a twist. He walked the beach Friday night, texted me that conditions looked terrible, and bailed.

Julian and I went anyway, and the fishing from the surf was great. I kept texting Kevin pictures. Halfway through the video you'll see the phone call, and he ended up meeting us out there. Later in the day the wind was gone and the surf was lower than on our first trip.

One bad day doesn't make a bad spot. Save your notes on where fish showed up, then come back when the beach is fishable.

What we threw: 10g to 40g

We were working the jigs, and we used primarily the Mercenary jig:

  • 20g: Julian and I both fished the 20g. We were running the 20g Mercenary.
  • 10g: Kevin had success on the 10g.
  • 40g: later in the day I caught some on the 40g Mercenary.
  • 15g: the biggest fish of the day came on a 15g.

Pretty much all sizes worked. If you're picking flounder jigs for the beach, you don't have to marry one weight.

If you're still sorting out weights, our guide on how to choose the right jig weight for depth and current walks through it.

Landing them: what the video shows

When Julian hooked up, the call was simple: "Bring it up. Keep bringing it." One fat flounder came in, and another pulled drag. We threw back a short one and kept the legal fish. Know your local size limit before you keep anything.

By the end we had flounder, a couple of jacks, and a lot of grinning on the beach.

Start with what worked for us. The 20g Mercenary is the jig Julian and I fished most. If you're new to the technique, read what slow pitch jigging is first, then check out the five slow pitch jigging mistakes and how to fix them so you don't learn them the hard way.
