About Us
Founder’s Story:
In 2021, I stood in a tackle shop, staring at rows of mediocre slow pitch jigs and feeling my frustration grow. As a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, I know greatness isn’t handed to you—you earn it through patience, skill, and relentless effort. Fishing’s the same: you can’t submit a fish without the right technique and gear. When I couldn’t find what I needed, I decided to make it myself.
Before this venture, I spent years as a blue-collar plumber, where doing the job right mattered more than making excuses. Running my own company taught me that real success is about integrity, delivering what you promise, and never cutting corners. I bring that same pride in workmanship to every jig I design, ensuring they’re built to face real-world conditions and help dedicated anglers rise to new heights.
One of my greatest blessings in this journey has been working side by side with my wife. Together, we’ve navigated supply chain struggles, managed inventory, moved across the country, and raised a toddler—all while staying true to our mission. It’s a partnership grounded in love, mutual respect, and a shared vision for what this business can be.
Our faith in God keeps us steady through every challenge. We believe He created the oceans, the fish, and the people who strive to master them. Respecting that creation means valuing honesty, hard work, helping others, and defending our freedoms so that future generations can enjoy these waters.
Just like on the mats, each cast teaches humility and refines our craft. Nearly four years in, I’m still here, still learning, and still committed to helping you fish better. If you’re ready to move past settling, embrace the journey, and reel in real results, welcome aboard. Let’s roll, and let’s fish.
Why do we call it “Submission Fishing?”
In martial arts, earning a submission over an opponent takes practice, skill, and the ability to seize the moment and get it done. In fishing the same rules apply: with an active technique like Slow Pitch Jigging, practice builds skill, and having the right gear when the moment strikes means you will get the submission on the fish. You will make it happen; our jigs will be there for you when you’re ready.
Why do we say "OSS" all the time?
In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), the word "OSS" is like the Swiss Army knife of expressions 🗡️. Borrowed from Japanese martial arts, it’s got a ton of uses and meanings. Here’s the lowdown:
-
Respect and Acknowledgment: "OSS" is like a respectful nod 🤝. You use it when bowing to a partner, giving a heads-up to your instructor, or stepping onto and off the mat.
-
Yes or I Understand: It’s your go-to for saying “got it” 👍. When your instructor throws down some instructions, you respond with "OSS" to show you’re on board.
-
Perseverance and Endurance: "OSS" captures that grit and grind spirit 💪. It’s about pushing through tough spots and staying committed to the journey.
-
Greeting or Salutation: Think of "OSS" as your all-purpose hello and goodbye 👋. It’s a friendly wave to your fellow BJJ warriors.
-
Encouragement: Use "OSS" to fire up your training buddies 🔥. It’s like saying, “You got this!”
No one’s exactly sure where "OSS" started, but it probably came from Japanese martial arts like Kyokushin Karate. In BJJ, it’s become a staple that embodies the values and etiquette of the sport.
At Submission Fishing Co., we strive to embody the ethos of the martial arts practitioner: fishing is a life-long journey pursuing excellence and mastery. We say OSS to you, our crew, as a term of respect, mutual appreciation, and in recognition of your grit. It's become a verbal secret handshake of sorts, and we hope you'll adopt it and join our ranks as we all strive for our black belts in fishing.
